THE PLOT:

In the previous Godzilla movie,"Godzilla Raids Again",the
climatic scene of the movie sees'our favourite monster in an avalanche predicament. This film continues straight on from this, with Godzilla trapped inside an iceberg! He is freed and heads straight for Japan!

Meanwhile, a pharmaceutical company sends some of its' employees to Faro island, in search of a mysterious berry which seems to have some magnificent properties. The expedition accidentally stumbles upon King Kong and brings him back to Japan. King Kong and Godzilla fight and do their best to destroy Tokyo!

IAN'S OPINION:

This film is a dramatic departure from the seriousness of the previous Godzilla movies. It was the first time audiences had seen Godzilla and King Kong in glorious colour! It plays like a giant rollercoaster ride, silly, funny, thrilling at times but has not an ounce of realism to it! Realism was sacrificed this time around by the Toho guys to make a massive blockbuster of a picture; a comedy adventure with a high kitsch factor that had giant monsters facing each other off for the mightiest showdown of all time and ,as previously mentioned, IN COLOUR!!! So what went wrong?

Not a lot with the actual film itself but the American bastardized version is the one that most of us are familiar with and going by that version, this is not a great movie.

HOWEVER: I have both versions. The American dubbed version on DVD and the original Japanese film with English subtitles on video, taped from a British tv channel that did a series of the original movies many years ago.

And here is the thing: The original movie is wonderful! OK, I was not over endered by the idea of putting a man in a monkey suit to play Kong and therefore making him look utterly ridiculous, but the movie is streets ahead from the American version. The American dubbed version suffers from lots of deleted scenes that totally destroy the charactor development and general humour and "good feel" of the original Japanese version.

Also: All over the 'net is a rumour that the 2 versions feature different endings: American version with Kong winning, Japanese version with Godzilla winning. And everything I have read says that this is rubbish and that there is no substance to this rumour.

Well please forget what you read on the 'net because there is a difference! In the American version you see Godzilla under the waves at the climax of the movie with Kong swimming away, exactly the same as in the Japanese version BUT in the American version you only hear King Kong roaring triumphantly whereas in the Japanese version you hear Godzilla as well, suggesting very much that this was in fact a draw! After all, Godzilla would have no problems swimming under water. USA VERSION: 3 Stars. JAPANESE VERSION:7 Stars.
